How to Prepare Your Stable for Winter

Posted on November 30, 2015

The temperatures are really dropping here in the UK and with December beginning tomorrow, we hope that many of you have already started your winter preparations to keep your horses comfortable and warm during the winter period.

If you haven’t, or need a few tips on how you can help keep your horse warm and healthy, then you’ve come to the right place! As specialists in equestrian buildings, we definitely know a thing or two about adequate horse care. Here’s our guild on how to prepare your horse’s stable area ready for the harsh weather that is inevitable coming our way.

Make Sure You Have Sufficient Essentials

You never know what the weather is going to do, especially here in the UK where conditions can change at the drop of a hat.

You need to make sure that you have a sufficient amount of food for your horse, as well as enough bedding and hay to keep them going over winter, just in case you can’t get out to buy any more if you run out.

Store all the excess supplies in a dry place to ensure that they won’t get ruined by any dampness and store any feed such as pellets and hay in containers that make it impossible for rodents to get into- it’s for your horses, not fattening mice!

Check Your Water Supply

You want to make sure that you will be able to supply your horse with fresh water, just like you would do in every other season.

However, as the temperatures drop, the chances of your water supply freezing over increase. To combat this, make sure that you are insulating any piping that you have in place. This will add an extra layer of warmth to the water to keep it from reaching freezing temperatures.

If you have any standing water such as buckets and troughs, you can invest in trough and bucket heaters which keep the water at an adequate temperature which is above freezing.

Don’t Block Up Ventilation

It can be extremely tempting to block out any form of draught that you find in your stable, especially as the winds start to pick up and snow starts to fall.

Although it is important to keep your horses warm, it’s also essential that they have access to fresh air, especially if you intend to keep your horses indoors for most of the winter.

It’s better to add an extra blanket on them or add an extra layer of bedding and let them have access to crisp, fresh air than to shut them into a stuffy stable all winter and put them at risk of respiratory issues.

Your horse should be fairly easy to care for during winter, but it is important that you check on them every day to make sure that they continue to be warm and comfortable and to exercise them one way or another.
