Expert Tips for Finding the Perfect Equestrian Building

Posted on March 31, 2016

If you’ve ever had horses – or any animal for that matter – you will already know how important it is to keep them comfortable and safe while they are under your care.

For horses, this means providing them with adequate shelter for when they aren’t off frolicking in the paddock. As specialists in equestrian buildings ourselves, we already know how to determine what the best building is for your horse’s needs.

Whether you’ve got Shetland ponies or shire horses, here’s our guide to building the perfect barn for your equestrian friends!

Is It In the Right Position?

Although you may not think it’s vastly important where you place your new equestrian building, but there are many factors that you should be thinking about, especially with regards to positioning.

As the building will be the main point of protection against the elements for your horses, you will want to make sure that your building is situated on an area that isn’t known to flood easily when it rains and that it has good air circulation – but not too much that your horses will be subjected to a cold wind trap when the breezes start to blow.

Try to work out what area will be the most protected from the elements to ensure that your horses are in the perfect location.

Is the Layout and Size Suitable?

Like most buildings, it’s important to consider the layout of the building and whether it will fulfill the needs that you have for your horses adequately.

You want to make sure that the animals have enough room to move around while they are in the building, but you also need to ensure that they can fit through the doorways to get in there in the first place. This is a very common aspect to overlook, but it can be a very costly one, too!

Make your aisles and doorways wide so that even the largest of animals can fit easily through – we don’t want them injuring themselves while trying to squeeze in!

Layout is also important, especially if you have multiple animals being housed in the building. Will you be able to open one stable door at a time or all of them? Ideally, you will want to make sure that all doors can be open at once, just in case of emergency.

Is the Flooring Adequate Enough?

Horses are more often than not on their feet for most of the day, so if they are being housed inside for a period of time, you will need to make sure that your flooring options are suitable enough for horses to walk and stand on.

Flooring is also essential when it comes to cleaning; you’ll want an easy to clean, non slip flooring that stays sturdy enough to support the horse’s feet if it does get wet.

Here at RE Buildings, all our equestrian buildings are designed with these aspects in mind, along with the welfare of the animals which will be housed in them.
